Fourth of July at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront

Hundreds of vacationers flocked to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this Independence Day weekend, staying late into Monday night.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — This Independence Day weekend celebration brought in a rush the Virginia Beach Oceanfront hasn’t frequently seen since the beginning of the pandemic.

“We have multiple lots, multiple sizes and every one of them is full before noon,” said Steven Salles, a parking lot attendant at 23rd Street.

He said people came to Virginia Beach from across the Commonwealth and from other states to enjoy the holiday weekend. He said he loves seeing the rush of the crowds.

“The economy here in VB is booming. I haven’t seen it this busy in years,” said Salles. “I think the Oceanfront business is epic. I think if you talk to the proprietors, I think everyone’s going to have a banner holiday weekend.”

All that foot traffic is walking right into nearby

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration on Monday announced a two-year pause on imposing any new tariffs on the solar industry, a decision that follows an outcry from importers who have complained the levies are threatening broader adoption of solar energy in the United States.

The move is a victory for domestic solar installers, who said the tariffs would put at risk the Biden administration’s goal of significantly cutting carbon emissions by the end of the decade by reducing the flow of products into the United States. But it goes against the wishes of some American solar manufacturers and their defenders, who have been pushing the administration to erect tougher barriers on cheap imports to help revive the domestic industry.

It was the latest example of President Biden’s being caught between competing impulses when it comes to trying to steer the United States away from planet-warming fossil fuels, as he has …

Castro Street businesses weigh in on permanent street

After more than two years of allowing a few blocks of Castro Street businesses to utilize the street for outdoor dining, the Mountain View City Council is taking steps to turn this temporary program into a permanent pedestrian mall.

The city voted to close part of Castro Street to vehicular traffic in June 2020, following the lead of other cities like Palo Alto that implemented similar programs in response to the pandemic. The current Castro StrEATs program allows businesses and the public to utilize the car-free roadway on the 100 to 300 blocks of the street.

The city has conducted several engagement activities to get feedback about the program over the last two years, and according to a city staff report, the community has indicated a strong support for making the street closure permanent.

“I think it’s absolutely fabulous,” said David Gamow, manager of East West Bookshop located at 324
