Santa Clara poised to put headcount tax on November ballot

Santa Clara leaders are holding off on putting a business tax before voters in order to allow for more input from a local business group.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to wait until July 11 to vote on placing a measure on the November ballot to increase the city’s business “headcount” tax to close a $10 million budget deficit, which officials attribute to a drop in revenue due to the pandemic. Councilmembers Raj Chahal, Karen Hardy and Suds Jain will work on revising the proposal with the Silicon Valley Central Chamber of Commerce, which opposes the plan.

Chahal said he’s been asking for this tax change for years and called the existing $500 cap for larger businesses a joke. He said city data shows if the measure passes, about 95% of local businesses will not pay more than $1,365, and 64% will pay less than $100.

Castro Street businesses weigh in on permanent street

After more than two years of allowing a few blocks of Castro Street businesses to utilize the street for outdoor dining, the Mountain View City Council is taking steps to turn this temporary program into a permanent pedestrian mall.

The city voted to close part of Castro Street to vehicular traffic in June 2020, following the lead of other cities like Palo Alto that implemented similar programs in response to the pandemic. The current Castro StrEATs program allows businesses and the public to utilize the car-free roadway on the 100 to 300 blocks of the street.

The city has conducted several engagement activities to get feedback about the program over the last two years, and according to a city staff report, the community has indicated a strong support for making the street closure permanent.

“I think it’s absolutely fabulous,” said David Gamow, manager of East West Bookshop located at 324

Former top Trump official rips Biden administration’s recent

Former Interior Secretary David Bernhardt criticized the Biden administration’s proposal unveiled late last week that gutted a 2018 plan to hold dozens of offshore oil and gas lease sales.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) published a proposed five-year offshore leasing program Friday that opened the door to a complete ban on offshore leasing through 2028. The plan — which would allow a maximum of 11 total offshore lease sales in that time span — also laid waste to a Trump-era version of the same program that proposed 47 lease sales over five years.

“Since day one, this administration has put climate activism over energy independence and energy security,” Bernhardt, who was the DOI’s deputy secretary between 2017-2018 and led the agency between 2019-2021 during the Trump administration, told FOX Business in an interview Tuesday.

“What it does do is make very clear that
